Miska Hockey: For the love of the game
Miska Hockey develops the total player — both on and off the ice. Cal Miska not only brings his own experience playing at all levels, but models the character and perseverance of a champion.
About Cal
Cal Miska grew up in a small town in Minnesota called North Branch, a town without a rink but filled with hockey players. Making the most of many local frozen ponds, players like Cal took to the ice wherever they could. In fact, Cal’s mom began to teach him to balance on skates when he was just 2 years old.
Though limited by local opportunities, Cal found ways to learn and grow as a player, including playing against his siblings, one of which is a professional in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played high school hockey for the North Branch Vikings and then the Centennial Cougars. He attended a couple of camps growing up, but with three other siblings playing hockey, the family was limited to training opportunities. Cal saw the need for accessible and affordable hockey training firsthand.
After high school graduation, Cal headed into Juniors to play in the NAHL and NA3HL, and decided to leave early after committing to the University of Wisconsin’s Superior Yellow Jackets. After his junior season, he decided to focus on academics and financially supporting himself. He worked in construction during college and ended up taking a youth coaching job for the Superior Amateur Hockey Association. There, he found a passion for a different job, but the same sport.
After majoring in Graphic Design and minoring in Communications in 2018 at UWS, Cal decided to play a year of professional hockey in the SPHL for the Railyard Dawgs, Pensacola Ice Flyers, and the Elmira Enforcers in the FHL. He had a great experience, fulfilling his dream to play pro hockey, and then decided to retire from playing the game in order to begin coaching.
In 2017, Cal began running a summer hockey program for youth players in Chisago, MN. Five years later, he expanded to three states with Miska Hockey development camps and clinics, while attending as the assistant coach of the SPHL Railyard Dawgs.
Since the ’20-’21 COVID season shutdown, Cal began focusing on local youth, junior, college, and pro players as he helps develop their skills in both team settings and private lessons. 2023, Cal is working with 10 local hockey programs, including high school teams in Minnesota. 2024, Cal provides year-round training for all age groups with the breakfast club, spring camps, summer camps, and AAA teams. He enjoys working with all levels of the game and seeing players’ confidence grow along with their hockey career.
Programs involved 2024: Cambridge-Isanti, Northern Edge, Northern Tier Stars, Chisago Wildcats, Pine City Dragons, Princeton Tigers, South St. Paul, Morris, and Minnesota Outlaws USPHL.
